We’re at the 31st National Agricultural Show, where we picked up interest at the National Agricultural Research Organisation-National Agricultural Livestock Resources Research Institute stall, which is showcasing the Black Soldier Fly. We spoke with Davis Kato, a technician at the institute, about the benefits of this innovation.

“At our stall, we’ve had a very big number of farmers showing interest in learning about the role of black soldier flies, as many are unaware of their benefits. Black soldier flies generate multiple income streams for farmers, who can sell the pupae for 20,000 shillings per kg and above, and larvae for 3,000 shillings per kg,” Davis explains.
“The Kitezi landfill tragic incident was a wake-up call, underscoring the need to view waste as a resource in agriculture. Establishing a facility by the government to add value to waste could provide a platform for training extension officers and farmer groups on waste management,” he reveals.
Kato notes that, “Poor waste management can lead to environmental issues, but the government is taking proactive steps. Under the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries (MAAIF), with funding from the World Bank, the Climate-Smart Agriculture Transformation project is on going featuring black soldier fly initiatives.”
